FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do I get started?

Genesis Dancesport Studio offers a special introductory program for all our new students. Contact the studio to make an appointment for your first lesson. Genesis can be reached at (415) 221-7125 or at genesisdancesport@gmail.com. Please feel free to also contact us via our online form here.

  • Do I need a partner?

No. We teach both singles and couples here at Genesis Dancesport Studio. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for your private lessons, and our groups and practice sessions will provide plenty of opportunities to meet other students with the same interests and goals.

  • What types of dances do you teach?

We offer all partnership dances, from waltz, tango, cha-cha, and salsa, to swing and club dancing. We can help you with your wedding dance, all of your social dance needs, and any dance done with a partner. To learn more about the dances we offer, click here.

  • Is it difficult to learn to dance?

Not at all! Our instructors are highly qualified and participate in ongoing training. It will take time to learn the various dances and their repertoire of steps. However, the learning is easy and fun. A steady approach with periodic practice will produce visible results in a short period. We highly encourage you to schedule your lessons close together. You will progress more quickly, and make your dance experience more valuable to you.

  • What is a private lesson?

Private lessons consist of one student or a couple working with one or two instructors. Private instruction is tailored to your personal needs. Learning at your own pace is the optimum method of comprehension and that is what private instruction enforces.

One common misconception about private lessons is that they take place in seclusion. On the contrary, multiple private lessons are often going on at the same time in our ballroom. Our students have found that learning in this environment gives them an advantage in social dance settings.

Private lessons are by appointment only, and may be scheduled during the studio’s business hours by calling the studio’s main number.

  • What is a group class?

Our group classes are designed to be taken in addition to your private lessons, and consist of several students learning from one instructor. Group classes offer a wide variety of dances and topics to better your technique, physical fitness, and understanding of ballroom dance. All levels of students have the opportunity to participate. Check our schedule to find our when our next group class takes place!

  • Will my lessons be at the same time every week?

Not necessarily. In order to accommodate your busy schedule, we attempt to be as flexible as possible but are not always able to schedule you at the same time every week. We also recommend that you schedule your lessons a few weeks in advance in order to reserve your preferred times.

  • How should I dress for my lessons?

Wear something comfortable that will not inhibit movement. Some of our students come straight from work and others come for their lessons dressed casually. Of course, comfortable shoes are recommended! We suggest a pair of leather-soled shoes for gentlemen and a shoe with a back for ladies - similar to what you would wear to go out dancing. Athletic shoes do not work well on the ballroom floor as they tend to stick and make it difficult to move your feet!
